This is going to sound silly.
As a kid, I couldn’t stand them. Mom would serve them up in a salad and I’d pick them out and leave them on the side of the plate. I’d pull them out of a hamburger and not eat them.
I’m talking about the tomato. I just couldn’t eat them.
I think it all started when I was about seven. We usually got off the bus with our cousins and this one day, my cousin sliced up a tomato as a snack. She sprinkled it with salt and pepper and shared half of it with me.
That night, I got sick. We’re talking throwing up, toilet hugging, three days with a fever sick.
Of course I associated getting sick with the tomato since that’s what I threw up the first time.
It would be years before I could eat one again.
Now I can’t get enough of them.

I’ve met a surprising number of people who can’t stand tomatoes. I really don’t get it because I’ve always absolutely loved them. Then again, there are other foods I can’t stand that are other people’s favorites. There’s no accounting for taste.

It was a long time before I could eat them. it was always “I ate one and then got sick” in my head.

That’s the first time I’ve heard of tomatoes making somebody sick, Richard. It makes me wonder if it could have been sprayed with bug poison.
