I’ve got several actually.
From the movie Heartbreak Ridge – “Overcome. Improvise. Adapt.” You meet life challenges head on and you figure them out.
Lazurus Long – “Specialization is for insects!” Nothing wrong with being able to do a lot of things.
The Bible – “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.” Change is a constant. Get used to it.
Also, from the Bible – Psalms 56:3 “When I’m afraid, I put my trust in you.” Knowing God has your back.
And the greatest quote. John 13. “Love one another.” If we tried that one a little more, Earth just might be a place worth being on.
And last, but certainly not least and George Carlin is blamed for this one. “Life is the ultimate joke. And it has one hell of a punchline.” Live here and now. Forgive and keep moving. Of course for a believer, the punchline is simply stage direction for the next scene.
Now if you want a story, here it is.
It concerns this guy who was looking for the meaning of life. He searched and he searched, and could never find it. Then he heard of this wise old wiseman who lived high in Tibet by himself. Everyone said he knew the secret of life.
So, he sold everything he owned to get to Tibet. He got his gear and he started climbing. He climbed mountain after mountain. Walked through long valleys in the cold, the sun, and the rain. He braved winter storms. And after this long trek, he came to the cave where the wiseman lived.
He went into the cave and found the old wiseman sitting near a small fire and he bowed down and said, “Oh great Wiseman. I have sold everything I owned. I have flown and walked far to come here. I have braved storms. Wild animals. All that to ask you one question.”
“What is that?’ the wiseman asked with infinite patience.
“Oh, Wiseman. What is the meaning of life?”
The Wiseman smiled and said, “Life is a little bird, singing in the meadow.”
What?
“Excuse me. What did you say?”
“I said, ‘Life is a little bird, singing in the meadow.'”
The man was beside himself. “Is that it! I traveled all this way. Sold all I had. Faced amazing dangers just to be told ‘Life is a little bird, singing in the meadow.'”
“Yes.”
“And that’s the meaning of Life,” the man said, exasperated with the answer.
The old Wiseman looked up at him in shock and said, “You mean it isn’t?”
Here’s one last one. I’m sure I’m not the first person to say it, but here goes.
Life is your story. Live it in such a way that it’s a story is worth telling.
