Daily writing prompt
What’s one thing you wish you had started doing earlier in life?

This sounds like a good place to list regrets more than wishes. But if there’s one thing I wish I could have done earlier, it would be to have met my wife, Julie.

Sadly, I wasn’t ready for her.

I had my share of issues as a younger version of me, and I certainly didn’t want to acknowledge them, much less do anything about them.

In short, I wasn’t ready to even try to be the man she needed me to be.

And I really didn’t know what I wanted out of the world, much less something of cosmic importance like Love.

And if I wasn’t ready and we’d met, we wouldn’t have worked. Whatever relationship we’d have had would have been a trainwreck of epic proportions.

It took life to make me ready. Every bit of struggle and pain to give me a yardstick to measure myself against. And even when I stood up to it, I found myself wanting. I was challenged to become a man. And I had to overcome hurt, trauma, feeling of insecurity, and a whole laundry list of character faults.

I had to stop looking at me.

You see, being a man or a woman isn’t something that just happens. The fact you can reproduce doesn’t make you one or the other. It’s about something more. Something I call becoming Human. You’ve learned to overcome a lot of things and for each of us, that’s different. Only then can you expect a walk-through life together to work well.

You have to come to the realization that marriage is two people becoming one. You’re sharing your lives. You’re becoming a witness to each other’s life. Make their witness of your life a good one.

It took a lot of work to make me who I am today, and the work of being a man worthy of her.

And I have to work at it every day.

Thank you, Love of my Life.
