Daily writing prompt
What’s a book that completely surprised you?

I’m what I’d call a “niche reader.”

I read history.

I read Science Fiction.

And I read military stories.

Rarely do I venture outside those little confines.

Now, you want one that I loved that’s way outside that?

The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.

I was in Germany and since I didn’t have a life outside the gym and endless walks, I spent a lot of time at the library. One day, I’m going through it and spotted the book on the shelf.

I’d seen the outstanding animated adaption with the talents of Alan Arkin and Mia Farrow, and had enjoyed it.

I took the book down, spotted a bean bag chair, and sat down.

I read it cover to cover and never put it down.

Considering I never made it through the Ring Trilogy, the simple fact I’d sit and read what amounted to a child’s book and be completely entranced for an entire afternoon with it is incredible to me.

There’s a piece in the film and book that I find very haunting to this day. I’m drawing this from memory so it might not be exact.”

In it, Tammy Grimes is providing the voice of Molly Grue. Molly is heartbroken when she encounters Lady Amalthea (the Unicorn) and cries out, “Where have you been. I grew old waiting for you. Watching for you. And you come now that I’m an old woman.”

Lady Amalthea responds gently, “I’m here now!”

Those words always echo for me.
