Daily writing prompt
What’s the hardest decision you’ve ever had to make? Why?

When I came back from the Gulf War, I was a serious mess.

Two years before, my then-wife advised me she wanted a divorce. Then she moved in with one of my privates. Add the usual stresses inflicted on a soldier and a law enforcement officer, and the word “mess” becomes an understatement.

I developed a poor attitude concerning humans and the female of the species. Indeed, from where I sat, they were occasionally useful creatures. I’d say this quote by W. C. Fields summed up how I felt: “Women are like elephants. I like to look at them, but I’d hate to own one.”

Then I met Julie. And I had to ask if my hurts and the possibility of being hurt again was worth the risk. I mean one more thing like happened with my ex, and I’d really hate life.

I’m glad I took the risk. My relationship with her has been the most rewarding part of my life. She made me a good father, a good husband, and a good man. Most of all, she introed me to Jesus, who not only saved my soul, but what was left of my sanity.

All said, I’m sure I got the better part of this deal.
