Now there’s a writing prompt! One about writing.
Part of it is the creative process. I know the story already because I’ve lived it. The idea is to take it and see what I can with do it.
In most cases, it’s a simple retelling. But then it’s not a story. It’s a police report. It’s perfect. It’s the facts, and it’s about as exciting as a faucet dripping.
A story is about digging into the guts of the person doing the telling or living of it. An example is the what’s going on in my new novel due out Christmas.
In My Brother’s Keeper, Will is trying to overcome the guilt he feels over killing Max at the end of book 4, Event Horizon. In the course of working on it he finds out something incredible. In trying to keep Max on the straight and narrow, he hadn’t helped him.
He’d enabled him.
What does that do to you when you find out it’s all your fault?
Well, don’t touch that dial!
We’re going to find out.

I think it’s fantastic that you can write action-filled stories about your past, Rich.

It is. Sometimes we try to help people out when what we really should be doing is let them sort it out. As my beautiful counselor wife says, “You can’t help someone till they’re sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
