I carried a gun for almost thirty years. Part of that was as a soldier with the U.S. Army. The rest was as a police officer. I’ve carried several different weapons in my career. My personal fav is the Colt 1911. But I’ve also carried S&W 19s, 10s, and a Colt 1909.

And there’s one question I hate about my former occupations.
“Have you ever killed anyone?”
The question reflects a lack of understanding and borders on disrespect. It’s as if they expect me to be proud of it. And frankly, it’s none of their god-damned business if I have.
But rather than get angry, I have a little fun with them. The conversation is rather predictable so I have the answers down cold.
Someone asks, “Did you ever kill anyone?” when they find out what I did for a living.
My answer, “Yep.”
The next question is “How many?”
“All of them.” Then I walk away and leave them wondering what manner of human being I am.

I appreciated the way your Will Diaz handled things in Event Horizon.

That was a bit of a challenge to write. He still feels very guilty about what he had to do. When Zorro resurfaces, guess who catches most of his anger and hurt.

Facing those challenges is why the stories your books are so powerful.

First off, thank you for your service. Too many people think what they see in movies or on T.V. is real. I got caught in the middle of a police standoff once. It was absolutely nothing like an action movie. In the end, the police were able to apprehend the suspect without firing a shot, and I am forever grateful for that.

Wow! Being on the cop side is all I’ve known and it must have been rough on you. Glad you got out okay.
