My church is teamed up with an outfit called Compassion International.
Most members of my congregation each sponsor a child through it. For my wife and I, it’s a mere 35 dollars a month. But when you’re dealing with people whose average yearly income is under $2000.00 a year, the money might as well be a fortune. In many cases, they’re trying to raise families and do the best they can, under conditions that make poverty sound like a blessing.
My wife and I sponsor a young girl in Peru, and the money we provide monthly gives her access to food, medicine, clothing, and shoes. It helps to keep a clinic and a school open. We always try to give her a Christmas and Birthday present as well.
Not too many months ago, our Pastor and a team went down to visit them in Peru. After a harrowing trip that would have made Indiana Jones cringe, they arrived at the small community we sponsor. The community gave them the best they had to offer which was a significant sacrifice for the locals. C
But they got to see what the people needed most. Things like tar paper for roofs. Almost every home leaked when it rained. Thee’s a need for things we take for granted like cookware and utensils. More and better-quality food.
So, if I had a million dollars, I’d use it to put a roof on every home there. I’d explore ways to make life better for them. I’d help build up their infrastructure.
A million bucks doesn’t buy what it used to. But in the right place and in the right time, even a dollar can change the world.
You and I aren’t taking it with us, after all.
Best to put it towards some good.
