The single biggest lesson?
That’s an easy answer.
To tell people where to go and how to get there.
I had too many people telling me I had to do this, that, or the other thing. The truth was they didn’t understand I felt I had my own destiny. And I was going to achieve it one way or the other or die trying.
Some thought I was a dreamer. Some thought I was stupid. Others considered me insane ( I must be – I’m a writer after all).
I wasted to many years listening to others. I had to realize that one day I’d be lying in a hospital bed. Next to me would be machine beeping out my last few heartbeats. Death would be tangible thing in the room. In those last few minutes would I say I tried to reach my dreams, or I didn’t even try.
It’s one time that failure might be an option. If you crashed and burned, at least you tried.
So, I learned to say one important thing. “You know that line Captain Kirk uses at the beginning of Star Trek about going where no one has gone before? Go there!”
Just because they’re afraid to give it try doesn’t mean I have to be.
