In my novels, Sheriff Will Diaz is called by his buddy RJ “Perk” or “Perkins.”
It’s also the nickname JR Madrid, the real life RJ, calls me.
My nickname for him is Mr. Ewing’s after JR Ewing’s of the TV show Dallas.
I can’t recall who started first, but the name Perkins comes from the TV Show Dukes of Hazzard.
If you’ve never seen it, it was a TV show of two cousins who ran around in a souped-up Charger called the General Lee. They’re adventures usually ran them afoul of local law enforcement. Perkins was one of the deputies.
I was never a big fan of the show. The only reason I had any interest in the show was the car and their cousin Daisy played by Catherine Bach. Of course, Waylon doing the song for the show was always a good reason.
To this day, JR and I call each other by our respective nicknames.
At least some things don’t change.

Having a nickname could be nice, Rich.

The nickname is my family is Meech! I say it was because my brother couldn’t see Rich. They say it was because as a boy I was always open to candy, soda, or a cheeseburger. Perkins just sounds better.
