Daily writing prompt
What is the legacy you want to leave behind?

I’d probably say “I hope they forget who the hell I was.”

But then that’s a lie from the Pit of Hell. If I really meant it, I wouldn’t bother to write the books I’ve written. And I wouldn’t have bothered to try to write out accounts of who I am or what I did. I’d leave me as a detective story to unravel.

The Lawman - The Cross and the Badge.
Read the first novel in The Lawman Series. Click here to learn more about it.

But I have a little experience with trying to unravel those kind of puzzles. My great grandfather killed a Native American. The story handed down word of mouth sounds like something from a Zane Gray novel. You can read about it here in a blog I’ve already discussed.

The actual story is a lot more interesting. It spells out the challenges of the time and shows the world he lived in. These are things that didn’t make it down in the oral history. You can read about that here.

What I want to leave them is me. I don’t want to leave them someone who didn’t make mistakes. I want to leave them my story, mistakes and all. I want them to know my failures and my triumphs. Where I overcame and where I failed.

I don’t want to be great man in their eyes.

I just want to be a man.

And if it’s destined, then greatness will follow.
