Grandpa gave me some advice that still rings true. “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Of course he’s not the guy who first said it. I’m not even sure who did, but I do know he heard it and took it as sage advice. And that’s kind of where I’m at. Work can be play, and if so, work is fun.
Play to me is doing what I’m doing right now. My finger poised over a keyboard, typing away, organizing thoughts, and then fine tuning what I’ve written. It’s taking the things most of us would just as soon forget and turning them into a concise story.
Of course, who am I telling the story for? Ideally, I’d be telling the story for you, my readers. But let’s be honest about it. I’m writing the story for the amusement and enjoyment of one person. Me. I approach the keyboard with a smile and the knowledge that I get to write today. I get to have fun!
So, I write. I dip into memories and spin stories our of them. I create people and worlds. I confront pain and victories and look at through a mirror. I turn all that into a story that brings me joy.
The fact you might enjoy it as well is nothing less than a gift from God.
